DMW Urges OFWs, Families to Prioritize Health Amid Regional COVID-19 Spike
MANILA — The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has advised overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families to remain vigilant and maintain a healthy lifestyle amid a rise in COVID-19 cases in parts of Southeast Asia.
DMW Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac emphasized the importance of following the health and safety protocols of host countries, citing the advisory from the Department of Health (DOH). While the DOH has said there is no cause for alarm, it has encouraged preventive measures to help contain the virus.
“We are just reiterating these health advisory reminders of the DOH, especially for our OFWs to take care of themselves, and to continue following their host countries’ health and safety protocols,” said Secretary Cacdac.
According to the DOH, as of May 3, 2025, the Philippines has seen an 87 percent year-on-year decline in COVID-19 cases and deaths, with only 1,774 cases reported compared to 14,074 during the same period in 2024. The department is closely coordinating with ASEAN counterparts to monitor developments in the region.
The DMW also reminded OFWs to continue basic health practices such as wearing face masks in healthcare settings, staying home when sick, covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing, frequent handwashing, and seeking medical advice when symptoms arise.
Migrant Workers Offices across the region are on standby to provide support and assistance to OFWs needing urgent help or guidance on health-related concerns.
