National Seafarers Day: 29 years of celebrating the Heroes of the Sea

At first glance seafaring may seem like an exciting profession—a job that pays well while offering a chance to see the world. But while that is true, it is more important for us to see beyond the general perception of this career. Because seafaring is not just a job, it is a way of life. Everyday seafarers face challenges, complications, and tasks which require their dedication and focus. They work diligently, persevering in the face of harsh working conditions, going beyond their limits, keeping in mind that one slip up could mean catastrophe for themselves or everyone on board the vessel. As the saying goes “the life of a seafarer is no walk in the park.” Famous words that frankly define the profession of seafaring. This year marks the 29th year of celebrating National Seafarers Day. An event in which the Philippine government, through a series of events, honors these heroes of the sea. These events highlight the appreciation for seafarers everywhere, how their resolve to the life of seafaring inspires others, and remember those who sadly perished or went missing in the line of duty.
